Could humans evolve and gain psychic abilities?

Question by Booty: Could humans evolve and gain psychic abilities?
I cant tell you how many times ive seen people have “psychic moments” right in front of me where they can predict what will happen next, know something when there was absolutely no chance of them knowing it, etc.

Even me, I have deja vu at least 3 times a day. at school, i always know what my teachers are gonna say to the point where they say “Do i even need to talk anymore?” and the whole class is like whoa he’s psychic. and 90% of the time i know who is on the phone when it rings, even if the call is unexpected or from someone that I dont even know.

Stuff like this is becoming more and more common among humans. So after a couple hundred or thousand years, is it possible that humans could eventually develop psychic abilities through evolution?

All humans do have the potential to be psychic, its just that most of us don’t know how to use that part of the brain. I believe that people can be taught (if they are truly open to it) to be a psyhic.

no psychic means connection between each human brain it’s impossible

There is not a single piece of peer-reviewed scientific literature that documents genuine psychic abilities (and not things that are explained by intuition, cold reading, etc.), or expounds on a mechanism by which extra-sensory perception could work. There’s been no shortage of research over the years, and nothing so far has proved true psychic abilities exist.

Furthermore, the primary mechanism in evolution by which traits become affixed in the population is natural selection – that is, a trait which gives members of that species a competitive advantage over their peers in surviving and breeding is selected for over those without that trait. I can’t see knowing who’s on the phone or experiencing déjà vu (which in any case is better explained by neurochemical imbalances) gives any kind of survival/breeding advantage.

Only if your psychic abilities help you have lots and lots of children.

With all due respect, how can you know “who is on the phone when it rings”, if it is from “someone that [you] dont even know”?

Psychic ability is a hoax, or worse, most often a scam to steal people’s money. As a previous poster stated, there is not one bit of evidence for psychis ability. If we did have it, then it is likely that those who had more of it would benefit and the genes would and presumably pass the genes on. That is, psychic ability would probably give an adaptive advantage and so we should all be psychic by now. But we are not, because psychic abilities do not exist.

Most likely not because evolution happens through natural selection (meaning that a certain trait helps a species survive while all of the species without the trait die…leaving only the few with the trait to reproduce). Since “psychic” don’t allow you to survive as opposed to dying, we will never evolve to the point where its natural to all humans.

No offense, but a little skepticism would serve you well.

    >”I cant tell you how many times ive seen people have ‘psychic moments’ right in front of me where they can predict what will happen next, know something when there was absolutely no chance of them knowing it, etc.

Humans have a natural tendency to remember hits and forget misses. What I mean by that is: yeah, I can think of a few times when I guessed something right even though I didn’t really know the answer, but if I were to concentrate really hard, I could probably think of a lot more times when I WASN’T right. Don’t confuse a statistical fluke with psychic powers.

    >”Even me, I have deja vu at least 3 times a day. at school, i always know what my teachers are gonna say to the point where they say ‘Do i even need to talk anymore?’ and the whole class is like whoa he’s psychic.”

Everybody has deja vu. I’m guessing you’re fairly young (am I psychic, or did I just make an educated guess because you mentioned being in school?), and deja vu events are more common among young people than they are among older people. It’s weird, yes, but it’s not indicative of psychic powers.

Plus, I’m not sure I follow your bit about the teacher saying “Do I even need to talk anymore?” Why does that make your classmates think you’re psychic?

    >”Stuff like this is becoming more and more common among humans.”

Do you have a source to back that up. I’m sorry, but you CANNOT go on a scientific board, make wild statements like this, and then offer no proof. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, so you’ll need to provide links to a lot of published papers that show a major upswing in psychic abilities among humans. And no, X-Men comics and episodes of “Heroes” don’t count.

    >”So after a couple hundred or thousand years, is it possible that humans could eventually develop psychic abilities through evolution?”

In a word, no. Psychic powers do not rest on any currently understood physics or neurology. Simply put, there’s no way for them to work, and you’d think that with all we’ve learned about the human brain, if they DID exist, we’d have found the place from which they originate by now.

Other people have already explained why evolution probably won’t be producing psychic humans, so I won’t say too much more about that.

Look, I know it’s exciting to think that you might have some sort of special ability, and I bet you do, but it isn’t psychic in nature. Don’t spend a lot of time wishing to be something; instead, focus on finding out who you REALLY are.

There. That’s my inspirational message. Good luck!

EDIT: Incidentally, I’m not a biologist; I’m a science teacher. I’ve taught advanced levels of biology, chemistry, and physics. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know everything, but I know a few things.

When it comes to matters of mathematics, engineering and physics, you cannot expect overly informed answers beyond the obvious from biologists. They are not well known for their indepth understanting of mathematics and insight into the physics of matter and energy—which is everything in the universe, including humans and human consciousness, in my opinion.

For example, they cannot fully understand the biology of evolution without first considering the role that classical and quantum physics plays in the matter, though they think that they can. It is the same for ESP, remote viewing, and psychokinetics. If there was nothing to these phenomanon, why would both Russian and American governments being spending huge amounts of money testing and developing these factors? I’ll tell you why, these extrasensory aspects of human consciousness has captured a great deal of governmental and military application interest. There are elements of classical and quantum physics involved in the procress that biology students and researchers have little knowledge of.

People do not behave randomly. I’m sure there are people you can imitate, certain key behaviors, tics, quirks that they do repeatedly. It is not clairvoyance that tells me that my boss will say the same old thing at every meeting. It is not fore-knowledge of the future that tells me that a particular person will do some things.

Phone calls are not random. There are a small set of people who call you with great frequency. You only remember the times you guessed correctly and forget the times you don’t. But if you only have a small group of friends and family to pick from, you’ll guess correctly enough to believe you have a talent. Assuming you don’t have caller ID.

Human memory is flawed. As you accumulate more and more memories and experiences, it becomes harder to keep all the different times and events distinct. It is easier to make mistakes in recall so that a similar event comes to mind when you observe a related event unfold.

Ultimately, “psychic” means magic or beyond natural law. Evolution is a natural process and obeys natural law and is limited to what happens in the real world.
